In light of the Sakurajima volcanic eruption in Japan, I present to you a picture of the very active volcano. From January 2013. There don’t appear to be any other images yet of Sunday’s eruption.

This image comes courtesy of the NASA Earth Observatory page. But it initially came to my attention from the Bad Astronomer page, who has some great insights of what he sees in the picture (and I urge you to read them).
Yes, this is a picture, and yes it is from a satellite in a Low Earth Orbit. But there’s a catch, which you’ll have to read either article (or maybe both of them) to find out what it is (and I ain’t sayin’).
